2011 Checks Out
Today is the big arrival day for our New Year´s crowd, and once they are here we´ll be busy entertaining and putting together what promises to be an awesome Pre-Party before everyone rolls down to the beach to watch the fireworks, dance to David Guetta and welcome in the first sunrise of 2012.
So with a little time to reminisce I thought we might award the past year´s Highest, Lowest & Wildest:
The High:
Too easy. The wedding of Rodrigo & Mary Ellen in July left everyone involved misty-eyed, inspired... and horribly, sloppily wasted. It was perfect having Paul behind the bar, Rafa on the barbecue & Suka spinning the tunes... like a Pirata satellite party. And I am happy to report that R & M are still a big part of the extended family; looking forward to sharing many more good times with them in the years ahead.
The Low:
Also a very clear choice. After years of the possibility lingering as the white elephant in the dorm room, Freddy finally managed to put together a sale of the property. Sometime next year, possibly right after Carnaval, the Guesthouse will permanently close, and a Pirata diaspora will spill out across Brazil (and beyond). For all its shortcomings and faults, this project had become an opportunity few people ever have the chance to realize: a stress-free, labor-free adult lifestyle just beyond the reach of the Establishment. Bohemian-wannabes the world over are still gasping in disbelief that such a situation was voluntarily handed away. That said... all your favorite stories have endings, don´t they? So too must this.
And finally, of the more-or-less 2,000 guests who have passed through Rua Joaquim Nabuco #165 in the past 12 months, we honor 1 as the winner of the annual Golden Coconut. After much consideration and deliberation, our panel of experts has chosen:
He parties like a mid-´80´s rock star. He´s willing to put together a barbecue any hour of every day. He often returns from a night out to find that I have given away his bed, and happily flops into the nearest hammock. You kinda wanna party with this guy, but you´re kinda afraid to party with this guy. He was only supposed to be here for a couple nights back in September... and he´s still here. Congratulations Ozman... the 2011 Golden Coconut is all yours.
